Choose clothing for your Pilates practice that allows complete freedom of movement.
When you mention Pilates, some people immediately think of expensive fitness studios containing complicated exercise machines. It is true that some forms of Pilates exercise do use specially designed equipment. But mat work, the form of Pilates exercise with which this book is concerned, is wonderfully uncluttered and is therefore ideal for practicing at home. There are, however, a few basic items that you will need in order to get the most out of your exercise sessions.
Clothes
It is a matter of common sense that you need to wear light garments, with no tight waistbands. In a class you may be encouraged to wear relatively close-fitting items, such as leotards, cycling shorts, and T-shirts. This is to allow the instructor to observe your body alignment and movements more closely. At home such considerations do not apply, although you may find it easier to judge the accuracy of your performance if you avoid large, baggy garments. Mat work exercises should be carried out without shoes.
