It is useful to have the following simple items on hand:
• For some exercises you will need a long scarf or piece of fabric about 39 inches (1 m) long x 8 inches (20 cm) wide. If you prefer, you could buy an exercise band from a sports supplier.
• A thin pillow or folded towel to provide support for the head during certain floor exercises.
• Some form of padding for the floor surface is advised. You may want to obtain an exercise mat, but you can easily improvise with a thick rug or a folded blanket.
• Eventually you may reach the stage where you want to use weights to increase the challenge of the exercises.
Space for Pilates Exercise
Pilates exercise can be practiced in any space large enough for you to lie down with your arms outstretched. Choose a warm but well-ventilated room with a nonslip floor surface in a part of the home where you will not be disturbed.
